Mathew Barney’s film Drawing Restraint 9
March, 13, 2007 at 19-00.

Nizhniy Novgorod branch of National Centre for Contemporary Art is continuing its activities on promoting and popularisation of actual art in Nizhniy Novgorod, despite the Arsenal building being reconstructed. In 2007 a series of events will take place at different sites of the city. One of the projects will be “ARSENAL VIDEO” programme.

The “ARSENAL VIDEO” programme will open on March, 13th with demonstrating the film Drawing Restraint 9 – the latest work by a famous American artist Mathew Barney, featuring Bjork, a world-wide known music star. The first night in Russia took place in March, 2007, during the project “Mathew Barney in Moscow”, organised by RIGroup together with Moscow Zalogovyi Bank with the assistance of Solomon R. Guggenheim’s Fund within the framework of “Special Projects” programme in the 2nd Biennale for contemporary arts in Moscow.

Mathew Barney is an American artist and producer. His most famous work is cyclus of 5 films Cremaster, shot in 1994-2002. Barney’s works are multimedia in performance and include performance, sculpture, installations, photographs, graphics and video.

The action of  Drawing Restraint 9 unfolds on board a Japanese whaler fleet flagship – Nissin Maru ship. The main idea of the film is the relations between self-restrictions and creative work. The idea is revealed symbolically through creation and reconstruction of a huge sculpture of liquid vaseline, called “The Field”. All through the film it is formed, fused, separated and reformed on deck of the ship.

The evolving of the form of this Vaseline sculpture is reflected in the love story, unfolding on the second deck of the ship. Strict choreography of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony makes the background for mutual courtship of two guests from the East, who fall in love with each other during the tea ceremony, held by the master of the ship. During the travelling the tea room “turns” into a tea bowl, gradually filling itself with warm liquid. The guests become embraced with this liquid and are subjects to a mysterious transformation.

The film is shot in 2005 under order of the Japanese 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Canasava, Japan and constitutes a fragment of a 14-part project called Drawing Restraint (1987-2006).

European first night of Drawing Restraint 9 took place in 2005 within the framework of the 62nd Venetian film festival.

Alongside demonstration of a 70-minute documentary by Matthew Barney there will also be shown: No Restraint, which is devoted to Drawing Restraint 9 shooting, and is created by a young American producer Alison Chernik.
